Materials

bread

plastic knives

butter or margarine

cheese

electric griddle or an electric fry pan

spatula

paper plates

napkins

Instructions

1. Invite the children to help spread butter on the bread and make grilled
cheese sandwiches. Talk about the shapes and colors of the cheese and the
bread. Usually, the cheese is a square shape; the bread is often white or light
brown.
2. Demonstrate how the sandwiches will be cooked. Safety Note: Be sure to
grill the sandwiches in a safe area away from the children.
3. When the sandwiches are ready, bring them to the table and cut them in half
and then in half again. Discuss the half and the quarter sizes. Encourage them
to notice that you can create squares, rectangles, or triangles all can be
quarters.
4. Ask questions such as, "Which piece is bigger?" Help the children count the
pieces that make the whole.
