Instructions

* Display the radio, fan, and three lamps at the front of the classroom.
What to Do
1. Turn on the lamps, fan, and radio sitting out at the front of the classroom.
Show the children how each one is plugged into an electrical outlet.
2. Recite the following rhyme with the children:
Turn It Off! by Mary J. Murray
Turn it off. When you leave the room, (clap, clap)
Save electricity. Turn it off!! (louder)
3. Whenever it is time to move from one activity to another, invite five children
(or the appropriate number of children) to stand near the five electric items
and ask the all children to chant the rhyme.
4. After the children shout the final line, "Turn it off!" they should turn off the
items, one by one, as they count down from five to one.
5. After the countdown, invite the children to applaud the five children for
conserving energy.
6. Have the children quietly line up behind the five leaders and prepare to move
on to a new activity.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children look at a set of objects and determine which are electric and
which are not?
* Looking at photographs of rooms in a home, can the children identify the
items that use electricity?
