Materials
Plastic one-gallon milk cartons, one for each child
Scissors
Glue
Scraps cut from colored construction, wrapping paper, and/or wallpaper
Large bag of potting soil
Grass seed
Indelible ink felt-tip pen
Trowels
Strips of pastel card stock, 2" x 12"
(5 cm x 30 cm), 1 per child
Instructions
What to do
1. If this is an Easter project, start it
3 weeks before Easter.
2. Cut the tops off the milk cartons,
leaving the sides 5" (13 cm) high.
3. Have the children decorate their
baskets by gluing on colorful
paper scraps. Write their names
on their baskets with the pen.
4. Have the children put about 3" to
4" (8 to 10 cm) of the potting soil
in the bottom of their baskets
using the trowels.
5. Encourage the children take
handfuls of grass seed and sow it
into the soil.
6. Staple the cardstock handles to the sides of the milk cartons (adult only).
7. Have the children lightly water the seeds and place them in a sunny spot.
8. Encourage them to watch the baskets daily and water when needed.
9. The children can use the baskets for Easter eggs and take them home to share.

Science: Place one extra basket in a closet and don't water it. After one week, observe and talk
about what is different about these seeds.
