Instructions

1. In December, you can find amaryllis bulbs in pots for sale in most variety
stores. These fast-growing bulbs grow to about two feet tall and have
huge bright blooms. Because it grows so fast, the children can water it
and watch it grow right away.
2. Make a green line on a graph to show the plant's height every few days.
3. When the plant begins to grow, have the children measure it with a small
6" ruler, and then move up to a 12" ruler. Finally, when the ruler is not big
enough, they can use a yardstick.
4. When the blooms open, have the children measure the big blooms. (You
may want to begin by asking them to predict how many blooms there
will be and discover if they were correct later.)
5. Each day, choose a different child to be the "gardener," who is responsible
for watering the plant and/or making the line on the graph.
6. Take photos as the plant gets bigger to show the growth.
More to do Outdoors: Help the children plant other bulbs outside. Make labels to tag
where they are and watch for them to bloom in the Spring.
