Instructions

1. When you have an extra moment, try the following activity.
2. Read Alistair in Outer Space by Marilyn Sadler or another book about outer
space, or talk with the children about outer space.
3. Give each child a CD to decorate as a "flying saucer" with permanent
markers. Make sure the child's name is on the bottom side of the "saucer."
Note: If CDs have designs already on them, cover them with the solidcolored
contact paper first. Prepare this ahead of time and trim excess
contact paper.
4. After decorating the saucers, move to the "test flight area." Children may test
their saucers individually or as teams. Children stand behind the blue
masking tape starting line and take turns launching (Frisbee style) their
saucers.
5. Start with a large target (scatter rug or hula hoop). Two points are awarded
for every saucer inside the target. One point is given for every saucer
touching the edge of the target.
6. After everyone has had a turn if there is still time, make the target smaller
(milk crate) and everyone tries again.
More to do Use this activity on a rainy afternoon (near end of day), as a follow-up to a
discussion of space, as an art activity, or as a math activity (adding scores).
