Instructions
Preparation
l Cut the top off each milk carton. Lay each carton on its side and tape
it to a table to represent a newspaper delivery box. Add an address
card to each rural newspaper box. Display these rural newspaper mail
boxes randomly around the classroom.
l Attach the 10 sheets of colored paper to a wall, two feet apart, to
represent front doors on homes. Print an address on each "door."
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about newspapers and the news, and how this
service is important to the community.
2. Invite groups of children to fold sections of newspaper and insert each
paper into a plastic bag or wrap it with a rubber band.
3. After folding the newspapers, suggest that the children role play
delivering the paper to various houses in the city and in rural
neighborhoods.
4. Invite a small group of children to carry the papers in the "newspaper
bag," insert the papers into the rural mailboxes, and toss the papers on
the steps in front of each "door" of the city homes.
5. Have children take turns delivering papers as they practice social skills
and say good morning to various people in the neighborhood while
they work.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Were the children able to fold and bag or band the newspapers?
l Do the children understand why people deliver and read newspapers?
l What kind of things did the children say to one another as they
delivered the newspapers?
