Materials

Cylindrical coffee or oatmeal containers with covers, one for each child

Glue

Wrapping, construction, or contact paper

Markers

Drum beaters, if available

Instructions

1. Mark boundaries on a table in front of each chair using masking tape. This is
where the children are to keep the items that they are working with. It will
provide a visual cue and help keep the materials on the table.
2. Place two bowls or plates of the same color inside each of the marked
boundaries.
3. Fill one of each color bowl or plate with the items to pick up.
4. Place the matching size tongs or tweezers with the items.
5. Show the children how to pick up the items and transfer them from one plate
or bowl to another using the tongs or tweezers.

Math: Using paper plates, write one number in the center of each plate (1, 2, 3,
4, 5, and so on, as high as appropriate for your children). Ask the children to
count out the appropriate number of items using the tongs or tweezers and place
them on the plates.
