Materials

Oak tag

Construction paper

Stapler

Stickers

Markers or crayons

Hole punch and reinforcers

Yarn or string

Small prizes and school supplies such as tiny erasers, sharpeners, stickers, pencils, candy

Instructions

1. Show the children how to cut a circle from the oak tag and one to match from the constructionpaper.

2. Demonstrate how to form a cone shape with the oak tag. Cover this with the constructionpaper and staple them together.

3. Invite the children to decorate their cones with stickers, markers, and crayons.

4. Next, let the children fill their cones with tiny prizes.

5. After the children have filled their cones, punch holes on each side and reinforce, then hangthem with yarn or string for everyone to admire.

6. Explain that in Germany boys and girls take a Schultoten or school cone to school with themon the first day. Each child fills the cone and, at the end of the day, exchanges the cone withanother child as a welcome-to-school gift.

7. At the end of the day, invite the children to exchange cones and take them home.
