Materials
4 cups (1 L) of flour
2 cups (500 mL) of salt
2 1/2 cups (1.3 L) of boiling water Mixing bowl Rolling pin Circle and star cookie cutters Toothpicks Baking sheet Cookie rack Paints and brushes Glitter, optional Yarn or string Scissors Clothes hangerInstructions
What to do
1. Have the children scoop 4 cups (1 L) of flour into a bowl.
2. Add the salt to boiling water, then ask the children to stand aside while you add the water to
the flour and mix the ingredients together.
3. Invite the children to knead the dough until it is pliable. Show them how to roll it flat with a
rolling pin.
4. Ask each child to cut two star shapes and two circle shapes with the cookie cutters.
Poke a hole with a toothpick at the top of each shape.
5. Place the circles and stars on a baking sheet and bake them at 250 degrees F (130 degrees C) for two to three
hours, checking frequently after two hours to prevent the dough from burning. Remove the
shapes from the oven when they are brown and hard. Set them on a cookie rack to cool.
6. The next day, invite the children to paint their circles and stars, adding glitter to the paint
before it dries, if desired.
7. When the paint dries, thread a piece of yarn or string through the hole in the top of the shape.
Tie the shapes to a clothes hanger, varying their height.
8. Hang the mobiles from the ceiling.
More to do
Cooking: Cut shapes from cookie dough, then bake and enjoy a special treat.
More art: Color star shapes cut from poster board with glow-in-the-dark crayons; thread fishing
line through an opening in the top, then hang the stars from the ceiling.
Movement: Have the children rotate, spin, and revolve to a selection of relaxing music.
