Materials
flexible magnetic strip, 1/2 " wide
scissors 3/4 " pompoms plastic bowl 30-gauge cloth-covered florist wire (olive green, black, or white) white glue 4 mm wiggle eyesInstructions
1. Cut magnetic strip into 3" lengths and give one to each child. Have them
remove the protective paper.
2. Put yellow, green, orange, white, black, tan, lime green, brown, and purple
pompoms in a plastic bowl.
3. Cut cloth wire into 2" lengths and give one to each child.
4. Show the children how to bend the cloth wire in the middle and down
on the ends to resemble
drooping antennas.
5. Ask children to put five
drops of white glue on the
magnetic strip.
6. Let the children choose
five pompoms, any
color, and attach
them to
their strips.
7. When dry, have
them glue
antennas to the back
of the fifth pompom. Add wiggle
eyes as well.
8. When the caterpillars are dry, have the
children attach them to a refrigerator, metal
table, or metal magnet board.
More to do Art: Encourage the children to paint a caterpillar on paper.
Math: Stick several caterpillars on a magnet board and ask the children to
count them.
Science: Show pictures of various caterpillars and discuss.
