Two large hula hoops or two chalk circles on the floor

Instructions

1. Explain that the class will be sorting children or things in different ways.

2. Create the first few sorting tasks yourself. When the children have become familiar with the activity, they will have turns creating their own sorting task.

3. Choose six children. Ask three to stand in one circle and three in the other.

4. The challenge is for them to guess the sorting rule used. Some suggestions are: three girls and three boys, three wearing sneakers and three wearing shoes, three who have short sleeves and three who have long.

5. Now demonstrate sorting things in the classroom such as trucks and cars, things that are red and blue, or things that are round and square.

6. Ask the children to think of sorting ideas.

7. Choose a child and arrange his task. The child then asks the children to guess the rule.

8. The child who guesses correctly has the next turn.
