Materials

plastic or cardboard containers with lids in various shapes

xylophone and mallets

assortment of metal pans, pots, or bowls

favorite class song CD

CD player

Instructions

1. Display the assorted container
drums on the floor in one corner
of the room.
2. Demonstrate to the children how
to use their hands or the sticks to
play each drum.
3. Encourage the children to
explore each drum and then
name each drum by shape.
4. Suggest that one child play with
the xylophone.
5. Encourage the children to form a
shape band as they play in
unison.
6. Play the favorite class song and invite the children to sing and play along with
the music.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Place a different material inside each shape drum such as popcorn seeds,
foam peanuts, cotton balls, or plastic 1" cubes. Invite children to listen and
see if the sound is different when there is something inside each drum. Invite
children to shake the drum for another musical sound.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child correctly name the shapes of the drums?
l Can the child use objects or her hands to make sounds?
