Materials

ice cube trays

food coloring

water

blue Kool-Aid(R), pink lemonade, or another brightly colored drink (red or

grape may be too dark for this activity)

small cups (clear plastic, if possible)

Instructions

Add a few drops of food coloring to the water and pour into ice cube
trays. Make sure the food coloring is different than the color of the drink.
2. Freeze the colored water.
3. Pour the brightly colored drink into small cups.
4. Let the children add the colored ice cubes to their drinks. Encourage
them to observe how the drink changes color as the ice melts.

Popsicles

Materials strawberry juice (available in most health food stores) or lemonade
Popsicle sticks
paper cups
What to do 1. Let children help put strawberry juice or lemonade in tiny paper cups.
2. Insert Popsicle sticks and freeze.
3. Serve later as a delicious summer snack.
Safety Note: Be aware of any food allergies and plan accordingly.
More to do More Snack: Make Orange Yogurt Popsicles. Mix 2 cups of plain yogurt, a
16-ounce can of frozen orange juice concentrate, and 2 teaspoons of
vanilla. Stir together and freeze in empty yogurt containers or paper cups.

What to do 1. Ask each parent to sign up to bring in a food in a specified color. For
example:
* red: apples, strawberries, plums, pears
* purple: grapes, pitted cherries, plums
* blue: blueberries, blue iced cake or cookies
* green: celery, grapes, pears, apples, kiwi fruit
* yellow: apples, pears, bananas, lemons, pineapple, sandwiches on
yellow potato bread
