What to do

1. Make puppets of Red Riding Hood, the grandmother, wolf, and woodcutter using the patterns on the follwing pages.

2. Make copies of the patterns and enlarge, if necessary. Cut out the outlines of each character and trace onto tagboard or oak tag.

3. Decorate the puppets as desired using markers, crayons, construction paper, fabric and felt pieces, wiggle eyes, yarn for hair, and so on.

4. Glue a craft stick or Popsicle stick to the back of each puppet. Use the puppets as you tell the poem on page 496 of The GIANT Enclyclopedia Of Learning Center Activities For Children 3 to 6 book.

Instructions

1. Tape one of each coin to the bowls.
2. Make a variety of coin-counting folders. For example, write "pennies" on the
outside of a folder and tape a penny under the word. On the inside of the
folder, trace five pennies, write an equal sign, the numeral 5, and "nickel" after.
Repeat this for ten pennies=10 (dime), and 25 pennies=25 (quarter). Make
another folder for nickels, one for dimes, and one for quarters. Have enough
coins for children to match to the traced circles.
3. Place the coins and the sorting materials on a table.
4. Introduce the materials to the children at small or large group time.
5. Encourage the children to sort the coins in a variety of ways, into the bowls
or using the machines.
6. The coin-counting folders are best used in a small group of children who are
ready to understand the more difficult concept of value. Or, they can simply
be used with children who need practice counting, and the value aspect can
be disregarded.
