Instructions
1. Read Harold and the Purple Crayon (or another book from the series) with the
children.
2. Give the children a piece of paper. Show them the crayons. Talk about how
Harold used just one crayon in his book and created a whole story with it.
3. Tell the children that they are going to create their own stories by only using
one crayon.
4. Each child chooses one crayon. Invite the children to spread out on the floor
or at a table, wherever they are comfortable. Play soft music in the
background.
5. Have the children draw whatever they wish using their chosen colors.
6. When they are finished, regroup near the easel or wall space. Choose a
volunteer to come up and attach his paper on the easel or tape to the wall for
easy presentation.
7. The children take turns telling and sharing their stories. Help them label their
papers as mentioned above (____and the ____ Crayon) and dictate as much as
they can. Display the finished projects with the title "The Adventures of [class
name] and Their Crayons!"
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Watch the children draw during free art and observe whether they tell a story
as they draw.
l Can the children describe the steps involved in building or drawing an object,
as they are progressing through those steps?
