Instructions

1. Collect children's books that illustrate songs. Book
suggestions include:
Down by the Bay (and other
books) by Raffi
Mary Wore Her Red Dress and
Henry Wore His Green
Sneakers by Merle Peek
Miss Mary Mack by Mary Ann
Hoberman
The Lady With the Alligator
Purse (and other books) by
Nadine Bernard Westcott
2. Place them together in a
basket or tub and label it
"Song Books." You might want to draw musical notes on the label to make it
clear for children to choose and return the books to the tub. You could also
make a sticker with a musical note on it to put on each book to help them
return it there.
3. These books are great to grab during a transition time or waiting period. Pick
out a book, or ask a child to choose one from the song book tub.
4. Hold the book as you all sing, or pick a child as a "song leader" to hold the
book as you all sing it together.
Author's Note: Song books make great pre-reading books because they are
easier to memorize.
