* March is National Kite Month.
1. Cut out four kite shapes from construction paper. Label each with a
different letter of your choice.
2. Form columns at the top of a pocket chart with a header card ("Flying
High") at the top and the instructions: "Place the cards under the
correct kites."
3. On tagboard, draw pictures representing the beginning sounds of each
of the four letters on the kites.
5. Using a paper cutter, cut the pictures into cards of the desired size.
6. If desired, make a file jacket from 12" x 18" construction paper with the
title and a kite picture on the front.
7. Using a color scanner, make a reduced-size color printout of the
completed activity showing the header card with all the picture cards
under the correct kites.
8. Glue the color printout to the back of the file jacket.
9. Laminate the header card, picture cards, and file jacket, and cut out.
10. To use this center, a child identifies a picture's beginning sound and
adds it to the pocket chart under the appropriate letter kite.
11. When finished, he can look at the back of the file jacket and check his
work.
12. This picture reference helps ensure that all pieces in the activity are
accounted for when you put them away at the end of the month.
