Instructions
* Find pictures of insects and spiders in old books or magazines.
* Make two color copies of the images. Attach one copy to the wall for the
children to use as reference.
* Cut the legs from the images of the insects and spiders, and laminate the
bodies and legs. Place the bodies in one bowl and the legs in another bowl to
keep things orderly for the children.
What to Do
1. Set out the bowls of insect and spider bodies and legs and show the children
the whole images of insects and spiders on the wall.
2. Engage the children in a discussion about spiders and insects, asking the
children to describe various characteristics of each.
3. Explain to the children that insects have six legs, while spiders have eight legs.
4. Show the children the images of spiders and insects on the wall, and count the
number of legs each creature has.
5. Invite the children to sort through the bowls of bodies and legs and to try to
match the legs to the bodies. Encourage the children to use the complete
images on the wall as models.

Consider the following:
* Do the children understand the difference between insects and spiders?
* Can the children count the number of legs on each creature?
* Can the children match the correct sets of legs to the correct creatures?
