Instructions

* Draw large numbers from 1 to 5 on the chalkboard. Make the number about
3' tall.
What to Do
1. Turn out the lights. Show the children how to turn on the flashlight and "write"
on one of the numbers drawn on the chalkboard. Demonstrate how to move
the flashlight slowly over the numbers to trace over the lines on the board.
2. Ask a child to choose a number and hold the flashlight. Show him how to
direct the light, tracing the chalkboard number carefully.
3. Add more numbers when appropriate.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* For extra practice, give the children buckets of water and brushes to paint
numbers on the sidewalk.

Trace This Line by Susan Oldham Hill
(Tune: "This Little Light of Mine")
This little line of mine,
I'm gonna trace this line.
I'm gonna trace this two,
See what I can do.
I'm gonna trace a three,
Just you wait and see!
Trace this line, trace this line, trace this line.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Give the children markers and colorful paper. Show the children number
cards. Can the children copy the numbers on their papers?
* Can each child trace the numbers on the chalkboard with the flashlight?
