Instructions

Introduce the activity by reciting the alphabet with the children. Show the
children the alphabet cards, explaining the letters.
2. Show the children a map of the United States. Talk with the children about
how the country is made up of states, and how each state has a name. Ask the
children if they know the name of the state they live in. Challenge the children
to locate their state on the map.
3. Set out eight alphabet cards and eight state cards so the children can see all of
them at once. (For younger or less-experienced children, set out only two cards
from each group.) Be sure the letter cards include the first letters of the states on
display.
4. Challenge the children to identify the state names, and to match the alphabet
cards to states whose names begin with those letters.
5. Consider asking the children to try putting the state cards in correct alphabetical
order.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify the letters by name?
l Can the children identify the states by name?
l Can the children match the correct alphabet letters to the state cards?
l Can the children put the state cards in alphabetical order?
