* Flag Day is June 14th.
1. Explain that Flag Day is the "birthday" of the American flag. Tell the story
of Betsy Ross and the making of the American flag.
2. Examine the American flag with the children. Discuss its colors, number
of stripes, number of stars, and what these things stand for.
3. Show the children pictures of flags from other countries, explaining that
each country has a flag of its own.
4. Let each child make a flag similar to those on display. Sketch the design
of each child's chosen flag on a piece of paper, and let the children copy
the colors of the example flags.
5. Write the name of the country on the back of each child's flag and staple
to a newspaper "flagpole."
6. On a map or globe, show each child the country whose flag he has
chosen to draw. Ask questions about the countries. Is it big or small?
Near water? Close to the United States?
7. When all the children have learned the names of their countries, have
them introduce themselves to the children by saying, in turn, "I am a
child from Ireland," or "I am a child from Greece."
8. Play the song "It's a Small World" and have a grand flag-waving parade
around the room!
