Materials

  1. five pictures of chickadees
  2. scissors
  3. glue
  4. tagboard or poster board
  5. laminate
  6. felt
  7. flannel board
  8. blank cassette tape
  9. tape player

Instructions

  1. Find a picture of a chickadee and make five copies.
  2. Glue the pictures to tagboard or poster board, laminate, and cut each one out.
  3. Teach the children the words to the following rhyme. 
    Five Little Chickadees
    Five little chickadees peeping at the door,
    One flew away and then there were four.
    Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
    Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
    Four little chickadees sitting in a tree,...
    Three little chickadees looking at you,...
    Two little chickadees sitting in the sun,...
    One little chickadee left all alone,
    It flew away and then there were none.
    Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
    Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
  4. Make a recording of the children saying the rhyme. Put the chickadees and flannel board in the listening center along with a recording of the rhyme.
  5. Invite the children to manipulate the desired number of chickadees on the flannel board as they listen to a recording of the rhyme.

Instructions

1. Cut two ski shapes out of
cardboard, about 1 1/2 '
long and 5" wide. Cover
both skis completely
with duct tape.
2. Place a shoelace across
the width of each ski, about
one quarter of the way from the tip of the ski. Tape it to the ski to make a
loop for the child's shoe.
3. The children may slide across the floor and pretend they are cross-country
skiing.
