Materials
flashlights (1 per child, or enough for pairs of children to share)
Instructions
* Draw a caterpillar and divide it
into 12 puzzle-piece shapes.
Number the pieces 1 to 12.
* Glue the drawing to one of the
pieces of cardboard.
* Use a utility knife to cut the
caterpillar out of the cardboard
(adult-only step). Glue the
remaining frame of the caterpillar to the second piece of cardboard.
* Cut the caterpillar into its 12 labeled sections. Fit each piece into the puzzle,
tracing its outline into the base of the puzzle as you go.
* In the spaces you just traced on the base, write the number names that
correspond to the numerals on their matching pieces.
What to Do
1. Engage the children in a conversation about caterpillars. Show the children the
images of caterpillars and ask the children to talk about what they see: head,
body, legs, and so on.
2. Read the children a book about caterpillars.
3. Show the children the puzzle and encourage them to explore the pieces and
read the numerals and number names.
4. The children can work together to put the puzzle together.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Ask the children what they learned about caterpillars.
* Are the children able to put the puzzle together?
