Instructions

Preparation s
l Set the box down and cut out windows and doors, so the children can
use it as a fire truck.
l Use cut scraps of cardboard to make ladder shapes, and attach them
to the back of the truck.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about fire trucks. Ask them about times they
have seen fire trucks in the street. Ask the children what purpose fire
trucks and fire departments serve in the community.
2. Show the children the large box and explain that they will be
decorating it to look like a fire truck.
3. Set out smocks, paint, brushes, boxes, and other necessary materials,
and invite the children to paint the box so it resembles a fire truck.
Help when necessary.
4. After the fire truck is dry, invite the children to dress up as firefighters
and explore their fire truck.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children understand the important service fire departments
provide?
l Can the children work together to paint and decorate the fire truck?
l Can the children play together using the fire truck and fire department
props?
