Instructions

1. Gather the children together and read a book about gardening.
2. Talk with the children about growing plants and flowers in the city. Ask the
children if they have ever seen a beautiful flower growing in a city. Talk about
how people do not need to live on a farm to have a garden.
3. Show the children the materials and explain the day's project.
4. Encourage the children to talk about plants or gardens at their own homes.
Explain how and when to water their plants.
5. Help each child fill a foam cup with soil, put a seedling in the soil, then cover
up the root. Help the children write their names on the cups.
6. Set the cups out where they can receive natural light. Encourage the children
to check on their plants every few days, to see how they are growing.
7. Help the children water the plants when the soil gets dry.
8. When the plants are well grown, invite the children to take the plants home
and replant them in a more permanent location.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Do the children understand it is possible to grow plants in a city?
2. Were the children able to plant and grow their seedlings?
