Instructions
* Cut out magnifying glass shapes from paper or cardboard.
* Set various toy insects out around the classroom.
What to Do
1. Set out the magnifying glass cutouts, and ask each child to take one.
2. Introduce the children to the word "entomologist" by explaining that
entomologists study insects.
3. Teach the children the following song:
I Can Be an Entomologist by Mary J. Murray
(Tune: "I'm a Little Tea Pot")
I'm an entomologist don't you see.
Bugs are interesting to me.
I look for insects here and there.
I study insects everywhere.
4. Invite the children to search around the room for insects while
singing the song. When the children find an insect, have them
say "I see an insect right here!"
5. Encourage the children to describe the insects they find, and to say the name
of the insects if they know them.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand what an entomologist is?
* Can the children memorize the song?
* Can the children identify the insects they find in the classroom?
