Materials
several sheets of different colored felt
marker scissors (adult only) construction paperInstructions
l Draw shapes (ovals, circles, rectangles, and squares) onto the felt and cut
them out.
l On construction paper, write the names of the shapes you drew on the felt
and then cut out the names.
What to Do
1. Engage the children in a discussion
about shapes. Challenge the children to
point out differences between the
various shapes they know.
2. Ask the children to look around the
room and identify various shapes they
see.
3. Lay out the felt shape cutouts on the
floor around the room. Give each child
a cutout of the shape names, and
challenge the children to walk to the
correct shape cutout and stand on it.
4. After the children find their shapes, challenge them to take their shape name
cutouts to objects in the room that have the same shape as well.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the characteristic of shapes?
l Can the child accurately point to and identify various shapes around the
room?
l Can the child identify the shape name card he is holding and connect the
name with an object in the room that has the same shape?
