Instructions

1. Explain to the children that there are eight candles on a menorah, in addition
to the shammas. The shammas has the important job of lighting the other
candles on the menorah.
2. Give each child a paper plate folded in half.
3. Cut out 1" x 2" (2 cm x 5 cm) rectangles from a piece of paper and give one
to each child. Show them how to glue the rectangle in the middle of the
folded part of the plate. The longer side should be vertical (see illustration).
4. Help the children cut out candles from the wrapping paper (or give them
paper strips). Ask them to glue one candle on the top of the rectangle in the
center. This candle, called the shammas, will be higher than the other candles.
5. Ask the children to count out four candles and glue them to the plate beside
the tall shammas candle. Then they can count out four more and glue them
on the other side of the tall candle.
More to do
If paper strips are used instead of pictures of candles, encourage the children to
"light" the candles by dipping a finger into yellow paint and placing it at the top
of the candlesticks.
