Instructions
1. Help the children cut adhesive paper into 12" (30 cm) squares to make a
small collage or 18" (45 cm) squares for a large collage.
2. Tape the square of adhesive paper to a flat surface (paper backing side up).
3. Peel the paper backing off the adhesive paper.
4. Help the children cut out freeform shapes from the piece of paper backing.
5. Ask the children to stick their shapes to the adhesive paper to cover certain
areas.
6. Encourage the children to sprinkle glitter, colored sand, or confetti over the
exposed areas of the adhesive paper. (Sweep up the excess and pour it into
its container.)
7. The children can remove some of the freeform shapes and use a different
media (glitter, colored sand, or confetti) to cover that area. (Again, sweep up
the excess and put it back into its container.)
8. Encourage the children to repeat step 7 until they have removed all the
freeform shapes from the adhesive and covered all the areas with glitter,
colored sand, or confetti.
9. Cover the collage with another piece of adhesive paper (the same size). Press
together firmly and add a border of clear tape to keep the two pieces together,
if necessary.
10. Hang and display each creation.
More to do
Make your own colored sand by putting 1/2 cup (125 g) of clean, sterilized play
sand in a zipper closure plastic bag. Add a few drops of food coloring and a few
drops of rubbing alcohol. (The alcohol helps the food coloring adhere to the
sand.) Close the bag and ask the children to shake it vigorously to distribute the
food coloring. Make several colors. In place of confetti, the children can use safety
scissors to cut bright magazine pictures into very small pieces.
