1. Discuss favorite foods with the children.
2. Make a chart, listing everyone's favorite appetizers, vegetables, desserts,
and so on.
3. Encourage the children to think about how their favorite foods are
prepared. Ask them if they have ever prepared their own breakfast,
lunch, or dinner, or watched someone prepare their meals.
4. Show them a few cookbooks so they can see how collections of recipes
are presented. Explain that they are going to put together a class
cookbook.
5. Individually ask each child to list the ingredients, the directions for
preparation, and the time it will take to complete her favorite food.
6. Copy their recipe directions word for word. Don't put words in their
mouth; simply encourage them to elaborate and clarify.
7. Encourage the children to illustrate their recipes.
8. Put all of the illustrated recipes together, make copies, and bind or tie
them together. Invite the children to create their own covers for their
books.
9. The children can give their cookbooks to a parent or other special
person.
