Instructions

1. Put pictures of different hairstyles, playdough or modeling clay, and small
balls in the barber shop/beauty salon learning center.
2. Gather a small group of four to six children in the barber shop/beauty salon.
3. Ask each child to select a picture and a small blob of playdough or modeling
clay and a ball.
4. Ask the children to first describe the hairstyle, prompting for words such as
curly, wavy, straight, braided, long, short, and so on. Color words are
acceptable.
5. Encourage the children to mold the playdough onto the ball so that it looks
like the hairstyle in the picture.
6. Ask the children to find something in the room that looks similar to the
hairstyle (wavy, curly, etc.). For example, a toy snake may represent long hair
and a ruler may represent straight hair.
7. After they have gathered matching items in the room, ask them to return to
the learning center. Display the picture with its matching item and the
playdough representation.
8. Have the children compare their own creations with others in the group.
