Materials

muslin strips (1"-2" wide, 8"-10" long)

acrylic paints

damp sponges

paintbrushes

glue

straws

string or yarn

Instructions

1. Give each child a strip of muslin.
2. Have them dip sponges into the paints and paint their fabric.
3. Let dry.
4. Ask the children to paint their strips with glue, all but the last inch or less.
5. Give each child a straw. Show the children how to place their straws on
the end of the fabric without glue.
6. Help the children start by wrapping the unglued end around their
straws.
7. Help each child
continue rolling
her fabric strip
around the same
area of the straw,
so that a "bead" is
formed. Let dry.
8. You can have
children make
one bead or
several.
9. After the beads
are dry, slide them
off the straw. (This
will be simple to
do if the children
started rolling
using the unglued
side of the fabric).
10. Help children
string their
"beads" on yarn or
string. Help each
child tie the ends
of the string
together to make
a necklace.
