Materials

8-12 plastic jars with lids

Ingredients such as cooking oil, sand, soil, clay, salt,sugar, flour, dry tempera paint, oil-based paint

Chart paper

Instructions

1. Place 1/4 cup (60 ml) of each ingredient listed above into a separate jar.

2. Add water to each jar and screw on the lid. Put a label on the outside.

3. Let each child take a jar and examine it. Has anything changed since you added the water?4. Ask the children to shake the jars and see if anything changes.

5. Line the jars up on the counter and let them stand undisturbed for an hour. Compare the jarsagain. Has anything dissolved?6. Make a chart showing the changes.More to doMore science: Mix pebbles, sand, soils, oil and shells in a large clear jar. Place lid on securelyand shake. Let the jar rest for one hour, then have children observe the layers. * Put a large jarfilled with water on the table. Add 4 drops of food coloring, but do not stir or shake.
