Instructions

1. Buy socks related to a book's theme. If you can't purchase them, make your
own illustrated socks using plain white socks and fabric paints.
2. Draw a large sock outline on a piece of white paper. Outline the shape using
a thin black marker. Along the base write, "A sock for ________." Photocopy
this template so you have enough to give one sock shape to each child.
3. Wear your theme socks on the day you read the related book. Explain how
your socks are linked to the book you've read.
4. Encourage the children to use their imaginations to draw picture socks that a
certain character might like to wear. For example, if you make socks for a
bear, draw pictures of honey, a cave, fish, or the forest. A sock for a dog
character might include a
bone, leash, water bowl,
or a cat to chase! If necessary,
show the children an
example of a completed
character sock.
5. Encourage the children to
illustrate their character's
sock. Write down the
name of each character
on the sock.
6. Ask the children to share
their character socks with
the other children. They
can tell the name of their
character and why they
drew the pictures on the
sock. ("I made a sock for
Harry, the Dirty Dog. I drew a bone because dogs like bones. I drew a leash
so Harry could go for a walk.")
7. Display the character socks so everyone can enjoy them!
