Materials

small (6") blue paper plates

hole punch

green fingerpaint (or green poster paint and paintbrushes)

8" pieces of yarn

crepe paper streamers (blue, green, and white)

cellophane tape

Instructions

* Set out boxes that the children can paint and decorate.
What to Do
1. Give each child a box, and encourage the children to paint and decorate them
to look like gobbling machines.
2. Set out small laminated images of objects that are and are not recyclable.
3. Engage the children in a discussion about recycling, and explain how some
objects are recyclable while others are not.
4. Challenge the children to "gobble" only the images of the objects that are
recyclable. Encourage the children to talk to one another about which objects
they think are and are not recyclable.
Note: The children love this game and there is lots of discussion and thinking
that goes on throughout the game.
Poem
My Gobbling Machine by Eileen Lucas
My gobbling machine goes munch, munch, munch.
It makes a funny sound.
It takes my recyclables everyday
So I don't have to throw them away.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand the difference between what is recyclable and
what isn't?
* Do you notice discussions about recycling going on?
