old magazines or pieces of cardboard

medium-sized ball or round object (perhaps a round sponge)

green and blue fabric paint

green and blue permanent markers

alphabet stencils

Instructions

* Inflate the globe or paint a ball to simulate Earth with blue and green (or
brown) paint.
* Using magazine pictures on tagboard, make an 8" x 10" flash card for each of
the Earth components: soil, grass and leaves, the sun, the ocean, the sky with
clouds, and a red flower.
What to Do
1. Identify each flash card with the class. Explain that they are an important part
of Earth.
2. Ask the color of the object. Have the children repeat the color.
3. Join the class sitting in a circle on the floor. Roll the ball to one child while
asking everyone, "What color is soil?"
4. Repeat the color with the children. Ask the selected child to roll the ball back
to you.
5. Go through each item and color until every child has had a turn catching and
returning "Earth."
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* After the joint class responses, call the children by name and ask what the
color of a particular item is as you roll the ball to them: "Audrey, what is the
color of the sky?"
Assessment
