Materials

plastic toy floating ducks

permanent black marker (adult only)

hand towels

Instructions

Use the permanent marker to draw
one shape on the bottom of each
duck. Let dry.
l Float the ducks in the water.
What to Do
1. Review four or six selected shapes
with the children.
2. Invite small groups of children to
work at the water table.
3. Encourage the children to pick up a duck,
turn it over, and identify the shape on
the bottom before placing the duck
back in the water.
4. The children can examine several
ducks in this manner and say
the name of each shape aloud.
5. Encourage the children to work for
several minutes as they take turns picking up ducks and naming shapes.

l If you do not have a water table, simply fill a large baking pan or plastic bin
with water.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Listen and observe to see if the children are able to identify the shapes as they
play with the ducks at the water table.
l Can the children count the number of ducks at the water table?
