roll of white bulletin board paper
large 6-sided die
clothing pieces for snowperson (scarf, hat, pants, and so on)
Instructions
l At the top of a sheet of paper, write,
"The scarecrow sees a..." using a picture
of a scarecrow's face instead of the word
"scarecrow." Be sure to leave lots of
space at the bottom of the page.
l Make several copies of the page.
What To Do
1. On a fall day, gather the children
together and talk with them about how
farmers often harvest their crops in the
autumn.
2. Explain that farmers often put up scarecrows in their fields to keep birds and
other creatures away.
3. Ask the children what things they think a scarecrow might see in a field in
autumn.
4. Set out the sheets of paper, along with markers and crayons, and invite the
children to draw images of things a scarecrow might see in the field.
5. Help the children write the names of the things they have drawn on their
sheets of paper.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children understand the function of scarecrows?
l What images do the children draw?
l Are the children able to write the names of the objects they drew?
