Materials

pictures of dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects

paper

colored pencils or crayons

Instructions

* Color or cover the poster board to look like an outdoor pond scene by
making a sky, a pond, trees, grass, flowers, and so on.
* Cut out or print pictures of different insects in sizes that will fit on your board
(make sure they are large enough for the children to hold, but not too large
for your poster).
* Put a masking tape loop on the back of each insect and attach the insects to
various areas of your poster. Place some in the sky, on a tree, beside a flower,
or above the pond.
What to Do
1. Set up the poster in your classroom. Explain the scene to your class. Tell the
children to study the picture to remember where the insects are.
2. After a couple of minutes, remove the insects and place them on the floor.
3. Ask each child to pick up an insect, try to remember where it was, and put it
back in that spot.
4. For a language component, give each child an insect and tell him where to put
it by using positional words such as "put it beside a tree, put it in the sky, and
put it over the pond."
