Instructions

* Earth Science Week is the second week of October.
1. Send a note home to parents asking that on a particular day their
children bring baggies of dirt to class. Include a plastic bag for their
convenience.
2. When the children have brought in their dirt, put it in a tray.
3. Encourage the children to use magnifying glasses to look at the soil
more closely. Provide tweezers, brushes, sifters, and colanders for them to
further explore the dirt.
4. Make a list of the objects they find in the dirt (grass clippings, moss,
worms, rocks, leaves, sticks, and so on).
5. Ask them to compare the various objects found in the dirt. Explain how
these objects got in the dirt.
6. Display any interesting objects found in the dirt.
7. Have each child leave with a bag of dirt to return it to the place from
which it was taken.
