scissors (adult only) marker 55 small dinosaurs or other manipulativesInstructions
* Cut the card stock into 3" x 5" pieces.
* Make number cards by writing one large number from 1 to 5 (or 10) at the
top of each card. Also make the same number of dots as the number on
each card.
What to Do
1. Set the number cards out in
numerical order in a straight line.
2. Ask the children to touch each
card and count at the same time.
3. While taking turns, have the
children count the number of
dinosaurs that belongs on each
card, then place the dinosaurs on
the card.
4. When every card is filled, ask the children, "Which card has the most
dinosaurs?" "Which has the least?" "Does number eight have more than
number two?" and so on.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Be sure to provide some play time before and after the activity because the
children may want to free play with the dinosaurs.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children compare the amounts on the cards?
* Can the children use terminology related to amounts (like "most")?
* Can the children count to five (or 10)?
