Materials
"The Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll
Medium and small Styrofoam balls (some cut in half)
Assorted colors and lengths of pipe cleaners, Popsicle sticks, and plastic straws
Feathers, beads, colored toothpicks, and thin colored foam shapes
Instructions
1. Use a yardstick to measure across the top of the outside hall door and about a
foot down either side.
2. Write down the measurements. Use double sheets of old newspaper to make
a pattern to create a "door crown." This crown will go from the left side of
the door's frame, across the top, and down the right side. (Think of it as a
hood for the door.)
3. The exact size of the crown will depend on the area available around the
door's sides and top. Adjust the newspaper pattern until it fits perfectly
around the door. Tape the pattern together.
4. Using the pattern, cut out a crown from poster board. If desired, make extra
crowns and save them for future use, or keep the newspaper pattern.
5. Ask the children to remember some of their favorite book characters. To
refresh their memories, show them numerous books you've read together.
6. Encourage each child to draw a different book character on the door crown
using washable colored markers.
7. Write each character's name and the classroom artist's name beneath the
drawing.
8. Books are truly the crowning glory to your room. What a great way to show
others that your class loves books!
More to do
Dedicate a door crown to a particular author or holiday and add characters
accordingly.
