What to do
1. Give each child a piece of paper and invite him or her to draw an underwater scene with
crayons. The scene should include one large fish.
2. Ask the children to color everything in their picture but the water. Encourage them to press
hard with their crayons.
3. Show the children how to saturate their sponge with water, then move the sponge across the
surface of their paper, pressing water from the sponge as they do so.
4. Have the children wet the blue paint in their watercolor set with the brush, then apply the paint
to their picture, creating a blue watercolor wash over their crayon drawing.
5. Allow the paintings to dry.
6. When the paintings have dried, have the children decorate the fins of their fish with glitter.
More to do
Circle time: Brainstorm about ways in which the children share. Record the ideas on an undersea
mural or on the reverse side of their underwater scene.
More art: Create a mural of an undersea world using pastels.
