l Make several copies of the shapes pages on various colors of paper.
l Cut between the shapes, creating shape cards.
l Display the colored shape cards in a box or basket.
What to Do
1. Invite the children to select several shape cards and cut out the shapes.
2. After the children finish cutting out the shapes, help the children use paper
lunch bags to create fun pouches in which to carry their shapes.
3. Show the children how to set a lunch bag flat on the ground and punch two
holes through the bag, so each hole is close to the corners of the open end of
the bag.
4. Model for the children how to string a piece of yarn through each pair of holes
and then knot the string by each hole, to create shoulder straps.
5. Provide stickers and various art supplies with which the children can decorate
the shape pouches. The children then put all their shape cutouts in their bags.
6. When the pouches are ready, lead the children on a walk through the
classroom, challenging them to look for objects that match the shapes in their
pouches.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child accurately cut out the shape outlines without help?
l Can the child string and knot the string to make a strap for the pouch?
l Can the child identify the shapes objects in the room using the shape pouch?
