Materials

scissors (adult only)

tagboard shape stencils

thinned blue paint

paintbrushes

construction paper

yellow and orange crayons

Instructions

l To make stencils, cut 3" shapes (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles)
from the center of 5" square pieces of tagboard, leaving a wide border
around the cutout area.
l Prepare a thin blue wash by adding water to blue paint. Practice painting it
over paper marked with yellow crayon to make sure it is thin enough to bead
up on the paint.
What to Do
1. Show the children how to
color a shape inside the
stencil. Encourage them to
press down with the
yellow and orange crayons
to make bright shapes.
2. Repeat coloring the shapes
until the children use every
shape at least once on
their papers.
3. Show them how to paint
with the thinned wash across the papers from left to right. Encourage them to
go all the way across without repainting an area to avoid having the paint
cover the stenciled shapes.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Show the children shape flashcards and ask them to name the shapes.
l Can the children identify the shapes they used the stencils to paint?
