Materials

9" x 12" black construction paper

crayons in white, pink, red, purple, and blue

7" x 7" heart patterns (optional)

paintbrushes

thinned white paint

newspapers to cover the work surface

Instructions

* Valentine's Day is February 14th.
1. Ahead of time, test the thinned white paint to make sure it will bead up
on crayon markings.
2. Demonstrate the process to the children, showing them how to press
down with the crayons heavily. Show them how light crayon markings
do not show up when painted.
3. Give each child a piece of black paper. Ask them to draw a large heart
shape, or provide heart patterns for them to trace.
4. Invite them to color in their hearts using random splotches of different
colors of crayons. Explain that it is not necessary to fill in every part of
the heart, but it is important to color heavily.
5. Cover the work space with newspapers. Show the children how to move
the paintbrush from left to right in one stroke across the paper,
repeating until the paper is covered with the thin white paint. Explain
that it is important to avoid painting over areas painted once so the
paint will not cover up the crayon designs.
6. Allow to dry.
