Materials

electronic keyboard or xylophone

Instructions

1. Play a note on the keyboard or xylophone. (If these aren't available, substitute a drum or recorder.) Explain to the children that when they hear a note, it is a signal to stop what they are doing and listen. Practice this with them.

2. Play two notes and explain that when they hear two notes, they are to sit down.

3. Play three notes, and explain that this is the signal to clap three times.

4. Practice the one-, two-, and three-note sequence with the children.

5. At different times throughout the day, play the three-note sequence.

6. As children get used to the three-note sequence, play four- and five-note sequences to cue different responses, such as jump four times.
