Materials

two bags

two sets of number cards 1 to 10

Instructions

* Place one set of number cards in each bag, creating two bags of number
cards.
What to Do
1. Take the children outside and divide them into two teams. Ask the children to
stand in a line behind their captain.
2. The first team chants the following:
Hear Me Shout by Susan Oldham Hill
Hear me shout!
Hear me shout!
Choose a number
And count it out!
3. After the chant, team two draws a card from their bag of number cards. If the
number is three, for example, the captain counts the first child in line, saying
the numbers one, two, and three while counting them. These three children
then go to the end of the line and sit down. The captain would also go to the
end of the line and sit down. The number one child becomes the new captain.
4. Team two chants the rhyme above. Team one draws a card from their bag, and
the captain counts that number of children, who sit down. The captain sits at
the end of the line, and the number one child becomes the new captain.
5. Continue until all children are seated, and start over if time allows.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Give one child 10 items. Can he count the items?
* Show each child number cards. Can he identify all the numbers?
