Materials

diegroup of 20 to 25 counters (beads, blocks, plastic eggs, coins) with 3 or 4 counters different from the others in some way (3 red beads in a group of blue beads;4 dimes in a group of pennies)

Instructions

1. Sit on the floor with a small group of children and arrange the counters in a circle on the floor.

2. Have one child toss the die and say the number (or count the dots) on top.

3. Starting at any point in the circle of counters (except for one of the counters that is different), the child counts to that number, touching each counter as she goes.

4. If she stops on a regular counter (for example, a blue bead), she gets to take the counter and have another turn.

5. If she stops on the different counter (for example, the red bead), another child gets a turn. Leave the different counter in the circle.

6. The winner is the player with the most counters when only the different counters remain in the circle.More to do Ask the children if they can find other things in the room that are similar but different in some way. Some examples might include a yellow dish among a stack of white dishes in the dramatic play center or a green block in a pile of blue ones.
