Instructions

1. Make butter cookies using this simple recipe: Combine 1/2 cup margarine (softened), 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 3/4 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 cup flour. If it is very soft, refrigerate for one hour.

2. Divide the dough into eight equal parts. Place each part into a separate bowl and give one to each child.

3. Encourage the children to choose a food color and add two drops to one of the eight parts of dough. Mix it with a fork.

4. Ask the children to divide their portion into four pieces and roll each piece into a ball.

5. Encourage the children to place each ball in a "caterpillar" row on an ungreased cookie sheet. Slightly flatten each ball. The children may make an individual caterpillar or contribute their balls to make a multi-colored group caterpillar.

6. Put the cookie sheet in the oven and bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes (adult only).

7. Allow the cookies to set for two to three minutes after removing them from the oven.
